La multinacional neerlandesa presentó el pasado 19 de septiembre la suspensión de pagos, el equipo de administración para este proceso, al no haber podido encontrar ninguna alternativa ni alcanzar la venta completa de la compañía, presentó la bancarrota en el día 23 de septiembre en Amsterdam.
El pasado día 22 el medio alemán de la industria editorial boersenblatt.net anunciaba que Swets & Zeitlinger Group B.V. se declaraba insolvente al no haber poder cumplir con las deudas y obligaciones de sus creditores.
La web informativa infodocket.com se hacía eco de este anuncio y confirmaba que Swets declara tener clientes en 160 países, oficinas en 23 países, alrededor de 570 empleados y contar con unos 8.000 clientes que suman un total aproximado de 800.000 suscripciones.
En seguida el gigante editorial Springer realizaba un comunicado alertando a los clientes del riesgo de seguir emitiendo pagos a Swets, urgiendo a estos a buscar agencias alternativas, y sentenciaba que habían suspendido los contratos y acuerdos con Swets. También Elsevier había comunicado a los clientes que cualquier orden remitida por Swets no sería tramitada. El gigante americano Sage también realiza un anuncio sumándose estas alertas y recomendaciones. La editorial De Gruyter, de manera algo más diplomática comunicaba que estaban en contacto con la agencia neerlandesa y que no tramitarían las órdenes hasta recibir los pagos. Posteriormente la multinacional estadounidense EBSCO, la mayor agencia de suscripciones del mundo, ha anunciado en su web este asunto y ofreciendo recomendaciones para protegerse de la crisis de su gran competidora.
Finalmente, con fecha 24 de septiembre, Swets Information Services B.V. ha realizado un comunicado oficial anunciando la bancarrota.
Si bien esta noticia ha supuesto una sorpresa sin precedentes en el sector, el informe anual económico de Swets de 2013, ya adelantaba que al cierre del ejercicio 2013 y continuando igual en el primer y segundo trimestre de 2014, la compañía no había logrado cumplir términos de pago de su deuda a largo plazo, creando una gran incertidumbre con respecto a la viabilidad y continuidad de Swets Group y sus subisidiarias.
Swets, con sede en los Países Bajos, es la mayor agencia de suscripciones europea, y la segunda del mundo tras la estadounidense EBSCO, con la que se dividía el mercado internacional.

Following the suspension of payment for Swets & Zeitlinger Group BV, granted by the court in Amsterdam on 19 September, the Management team, together with Mr J.L.M. Groenewegen (CMS), the appointed administrator, have been working tirelessly to investigate alternatives for the business. Unfortunately, concrete alternatives to sell the business as a whole have not materialised and due to these developments Swets Information Services B.V. filed for bankruptcy on 23 September 2014. The court of Amsterdam honoured this request and as per 23 September 2014 Swets Information Services B.V. is declared bankrupt.
Mr. J.L.M. Groenewegen has now been appointed as trustee and the court of Amsterdam has also granted a cooling off period (afkoelingsperiode) for a duration of two months. Swets Information Services B.V. has approximately 110 employees in the Netherlands. As a consequence of the bankruptcy the employment contracts with these employees will be terminated.
The bankruptcy of the Swets Information Services B.V. does (for now) not affect its (foreign) subsidiaries as the bankruptcy is only related to Swets Information Services B.V. If and in which way the bankruptcy of Swets Information Services B.V. will affect its branches is currently under investigation by the trustee at this moment.
In the coming days the trustee and the Management team will continue discussions with organisations and individuals who may be interested in purchasing parts of the business and will be making every effort to try to preserve
employment, where possible. Alternative solutions for the subsidiaries, or branches, of Swets Information Services B.V. which could see them continue activities on a stand alone basis will also be investigated.
